The Mom Mafia
One thing I've discovered over the last few years is that most stay-at-home moms run a side business. Whether it be Pampered Chef (kitchen tools), Mary Kay (makeup), Creative Memories (scrapbooking), Lia Sophia (jewelry), Stampin' Up (stamps), or any of the others, they're convinced they can create a sustainable second income. While this is a noble goal that looks good on paper, it rarely works in practice. Why? Simple mathematics. An ex-coworker of mine dubbed it the "Mom Mafia". Each mom selling a product feels obligated to make purchases from every other mom in the group who's hawking their own wares. Simply put, the money just gets shuffled around the same group of people, with any profit more than eaten up in purchases from the other women. I guess the parties are fun though.
